Russell Wilson filed for divorce from his wife Ashton Meem and the action stunned fans of the Seattle Seahawks quarterback.
Immediate speculation by gossips was that the cause of the divorce was cheating by Ashton.
Wilson and his wife were very active in charities around the city of Seattle and were High School sweethearts and seemed like a rock solid couple and when the divorce hit earlier this year, the Seattle P-I expressed shock, writing:
"In many of his off-field appearances, you see Wilson with his wife, Ashton, at the ESPY awards show, Children's Hospital and even at Marymoor Park…to help an owner find her lost dog. From their smiles, you assumed they were happy, a young couple still in the throes of matrimonial bliss two years after their wedding day."
They asked the question on every gossips mind, what was the cause of divorce?
"Was there another woman? Another man? Or just irreconcilable differences?"
Seattle Weekly observed after the divorce was announced:
"There'd been no rumors of trouble. As recently as February, Ashton, in a local TV interview, spoke glowingly about her husband—why he’s so level-headed and how she buys him salted caramels as a pregame ritual. Just a few weeks before the announcement, Wilson ran a picture of his wife between the Bible verses he posts daily on his Twitter feed, indicating theirs was still a marriage made in heaven."
There were rumors that his teammate Golden Tate may have been involved.
Tate is no longer with the Seahawks, he has moved on to the Detroit Lions, but he used Twitter to blast gossips on the rumors.
Sportsgrid looked at the money and the timing and wondered how much money Russell Wilson saved by getting his divorce now, as opposed to after signing his big deal.
"Half of $662,434 (that’s how much he’s due this coming season) is a lot less than the $120.6 million deal that Joe Flacco received after winning the Super Bowl two years ago. Did Russ do the math and figure it’d make more sense to get hitched AFTER he got paid, rather than go into his next contract with a crumbling marriage capable of cutting his deal in half should things go south? Is he protecting that money?"
They conclude it with "We have no idea."
Wilson will be the starting QB for the Seattle Seahawks tonight when they play the Washington Redskins.
