Authorities have identified Michah Xavier Johnson of Mesquite, Texas as the shooter in an ambush in Dallas during a Black Lives Matter protest that has left at least five police officers dead.
Photos from his Facebook page published by Heavy.Com show Micah X. Johnson in a military uniform, specifically a US Army uniform.
Johnson was able to shoot twelve people (five have died) before being killed by officers with a robot bomb.
Before he was killed, the gunman told the hostage negotiator his motivations behind the attack.
'The suspect said he was upset about Black Lives Matter. He said he was upset about the recent police shootings of black suspects. He said he was upset at white people. The suspect stated he wanted to kill white people, especially white officers,' Dallas Police Chief David Brown revealed at a press conference.
Three other people were said to be in custody in connection with the case and not cooperating with authorities, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Johnson claimed he was acting alone.
President Obama called it "a vicious, calculated and despicable attack on law enforcement," in remarks delivered at the start of his trip to Warsaw, Poland.
Saying that he had spoken with Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, Obama said, "I believe that I speak for every single American when I say that we are horrified over these events, and that we stand united with the people and the police department in Dallas."
Obama added that while the "twisted motivations" of the attackers will surely emerge, "there is no possible justification for these kinds of attacks, or any violence against law enforcement."
